The Inn

Home to Island hospitality for almost a century.

Briarcliffe Inn was originally built in 1914 and has had quite a history over the years. While researching the history of the property we discovered that this house had been one of the first bed and breakfasts on the Island known as the Briarcliffe Tourist Home with guests including Anne of Green Gables author, Lucy Maud Montgomery

Briarcliffe was the site of an innovative farm in the 1920's run by Edwin MacFarlane, the original builder of the house. In the summer, his wife Fedrica would rent rooms to Baptist ministers looking for a seaside retreat. She had a reputation as an excellent hostess and her Sunday afternoon teas attracted some of the Island's finest ladies.... including Ms. Montgomery whose first teaching position was just down the road in Lower Bedeque. Lucy Maud boarded with Fedrica's family, the Leards, while teaching at the school.  Briarcliffe was run as a bed & breakfast until the mid-1950's when Edwin and Fedrica retired.

The land Briarcliffe sits on is at the end of Salutation Cove Road in Fernwood, surrounded by potato fields overlooking the Northumberland Strait.

Mary and Bill Kendrick, the new Innkeepers, fell in love with the house and spent 9 months lovingly restoring the house to its original grandeur to open as a 4 1/2 Star Inn.

During the restoration period they also produced a documentary which was featured on HGTV Canada called "Bed & Breakfast Dream".

Did You Know
Shades of Autumn
An autumn day, when the air is so clear you might imagine catching sight of the nearest continent an ocean away. When red clay roads are canopied by gold and scarlet. Some are lucky enough to live here and enjoy it all but we would love to share it with you.
